Downtown Phoenix Area Guide

Major improvements are going on in Downtown Phoenix, making it an exciting place to be if you like city living.

Over 43,000 people work in Downtown Phoenix now, and the City plans to increase that number by making it easier to get to work with the new light rail line that will be opening in 2008.

The Civic Plaza Convention center is being expanded to house larger or multiple conventions, opening in phases in 2006 and 2008. A 1,000 room Sheraton Hotel will open in 2008.

Arizona State University and the University of Arizona will have a sizeable presence in downtown Phoenix, with over 7,500 students mainly involved in the medical school and the bioscience fields. The medical school will be a key element of the biomedical campus which will include TGen, the ASU Biomedical Informatics Department, the Arizona Biomedical Collaborative (ABC) and possibly space for the UA College of Pharmacy.

Developers have responded to the renewed interest in downtown Phoenix by creating several loft and condo projects like the Orpheum Lofts and the Third Avenue lofts.
