Phoenix Area North Valley Neighborhoods

Anthem

Del Webb “created” Anthem back in about 1999, as a total package of recreation, schools, businesses, medical facilities and housing.   Their plan was to build about 12,000 homes, and the community is more than half-way towards its goal.  Anthem has 3 elementary schools, a state-of-the-art high school, a brand new library, a medical complex, a shopping mall, and a large commerce park full of businesses.

Anthem has two “neighborhoods,” each with a bit different feel.  The Anthem Country Club is a gated community, built around two championship golf courses, and rises up the hillside.  The Country Club has a luxurious 34,000 square foot clubhouse with pool and tennis facilities, and another is being built this year.

Anthem Parkside consists of family oriented neighborhoods, although there are still many residents without children.  The Anthem Community Center is constantly busy with activities like dance classes, sports leagues (for both adults and kids), exercise classes, music and computer classes and fun events like a rock wall climbing contest.  Outdoors is busy too, with the “Big Splash” water park, a 63 acre park with catch-and-release fishing, a railroad, a skate park, and acres of baseball and soccer fields.

Visiting Anthem?  Enjoy The Outlets at Anthem, on the west side of I-17 at the Anthem Way exit.  Off the Hook Sushi is a great neighborhood restaurant open for dinner, on the corner of Daisy Mountain and Anthem way (take the Anthem Way exit and go west a few miles).

Cave Creek

East of Anthem is Desert Hills, a small desert community that gives way to the town of Cave Creek.  With over 4000 residents, this area has a charming rural Arizona feel, a tradition that its residents fiercely defend.  You won’t see very many subdivision homes here.  Instead, there’s horse property and homes with big lots and desert landscaping.

Downtown Cave Creek is North of Carefree Highway on Cave Creek Road, with some unique art galleries and fun shops.

Visiting Cave Creek?  Hit the desert outdoors at Cave Creek Recreation area http://www.maricopa.gov/parks/cave_creek/, which includes hiking trails, horseback riding and picnicking.  You’ll feel like you are miles from civilization.  Bring plenty of water and sunscreen.  Golfers will love the Rancho Manana Golf Resort.  The Tonto Bar and Grill (480 488-0698 )is on the property as well, and features a view of the course and some great food.

Tatum Ridge

Not technically a “town” or a Phoenix village, this area is mostly filled with new homes.  The term “Tatum Ridge” comes from the huge shopping facility of the same name, which is on the corner of Highway 101 and Tatum Rd. Nearby is a sea of fairly new homes priced mostly in the $400s and up, in developments like Tatum Highlands,  Tatum Ridge and Tatum Ranch.  Once a part of the “far north,” residents of these developments now enjoy an easy commute to Scottsdale via 101, and Phoenix via Highway 51.

Visiting the Tatum Ridge area?  The JW Marriott has a beautiful resort, just north of the Tatum Ridge Shopping Center.  Stop in for dinner, the spa, and to enjoy their outdoor patio.

North Glendale

North of Highway 101 and West of I-17 are some interesting areas that home shoppers may want to explore.  Arrowhead Lakes is a beautiful development between 50th and 59th Avenue, north of 101, with homes backing into a lake that spreads like fingers around the development.  Arrowhead Ranch is a master planned community spreading from 67th to 75th Avenue, north of Union Hills road.  Homes here usually start in the $200,000 range, and many have been built within the last 10 years.

North of Arrowhead Ranch and Arrowhead lakes is a set of newer developments which are worth a look.  Each neighborhood is different, and there are some areas with million-dollar homes.
